Many strata communities have implemented community gardens in recent years, but even if yours hasn’t yet, now might be just the time to start. Spring and summer are always great seasons for growing all types of vegetables and herbs, so if you’ve been putting off that community garden for a while, it’s time to get cracking!
Even if you don’t have a designated community garden, you may have space on your property to get some vegetables and herbs growing. Even your balcony can offer a great range of homegrown produce. Let’s take a look at all of the best herbs and vegetables to plant during spring and summer.
Vegetables to plant in spring
In most cases, if you can plant a vegetable in spring, you’ll still be able to plant it in summer. However, because a lot of growth occurs in the blooming spring season, planting too late in the year may mean you don’t get the most out of your growth.
Plant these vegetables in spring:
- Tomatoes
- Carrots
- Cucumbers
- Green beans
- Chillies
- Lettuce
- Potatoes
- Capsicums
- Beetroot
- Eggplants
- Pumpkin
- Corn
If you plant any of these during spring, you should get some great results. Bear in mind that some will be ready for harvesting before others, so you’ll be able to enjoy the fruits (or vegetables) of your labour sooner.
Herbs to plant in spring
Herbs are terrific to grow in a strata environment because as long as your by-laws permit it, you can make a nice little herb garden for yourself either inside or on the balcony. You don’t need a lot of space, so try planting some of these herbs during spring:
- Rosemary
- Sage
- Parsley
- Chives
- Basil
- Thyme
- Dill
- Mint
- Oregano
Herbs are usually pretty hardy, too, so you can get away with planting them slightly out of season and still get a nice yield for your cooking when they’re ready to harvest.
Vegetables to plant in summer
Needless to say, with spring and summer being close together, many of the recommended vegetables will cross over, but here are some additional ideas for your summer planting.
- Beans
- Leek
- Lettuce
- Sweet corn
- Sweet potato
- Zucchini
- Cabbage
- Capsicums
- Celery
- Carrots
- Cauliflower
- Parsnips

Herbs to plant in summer
Once again, there will be some usual suspects here because herbs grow quite well regardless of the season, but some of your best options are:
- Basil
- Fennel
- Mint
- Parsley
- Coriander
- Chives
- Tarragon
Good luck with all the planting and, hey, if you get a great harvest, why not share them with your neighbours, it’s a great way to get to know each other better.
