Depending on your children’s age and the types of facilities available in your strata building, there are many ways to engage kids in your strata community. The great thing is kids tend to make friends exceptionally fast (often putting their parents to shame). So, as long as you have some space and the desire to make your building enjoyable for kids, it’s not as difficult as it sounds to keep kids engaged.
Be a good example
If you want your kids to be part of a flourishing strata community, the first step is for you to implant yourself in the group. That means being a good neighbour and following the by-laws of your building.
It also means being a role model for them. They’ll learn from you, so being considerate in shared spaces like hallways or parks is a must. If they see you respecting other people’s property and talking politely with neighbours, this is hopefully the example they will follow.
It’s also worth ensuring our children understand all of the by-laws, especially when it comes to the use of common areas such as keeping noise down when walking along corridors to the units.
Talk with other parents in the community
Get to know other parents in your strata community. Ask them what they are doing and if they would like to see more activities for kids. If you spot some neighbours with children the same age as yours, making friends with their parents is a great way to help the kids make new connections.
By getting to know other parents in your building, you open up a wide range of possibilities for events, sleepovers, kids playing together and even some shared child-minding or school pick-up and drop-off. Friends that live close by are great friends, indeed!
Host a gathering
Get to know your neighbours and the kids in your strata community by inviting them over for dinner or a movie night. You might also consider a BBQ, a pool party or other type of gathering in a shared space. These are great ways to meet new neighbours and allow the kids to mingle and get to know each other.
Consider starting a kid’s activity group
The purpose of a kid’s activity group is to give children an opportunity to play and learn together in a safe environment, with the support of their parents and other adults. Like any strata community activity, you need at least one person who is willing to take on the role of organiser.
The great thing is you don’t need to do anything elaborate or even get a lot of people involved. If there isn’t much room for activities in your building, consider inviting some parents to bring their kids along to a local park or swimming pool. As long as there are responsible parents involved, kids can get much more engaged with the strata community and enjoy life to the fullest.
